“You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words,” climate activist Greta Thunberg tells the UN. “We are in the beginning of a mass extinction and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth. How dare you.” https://t.co/F5Umw55Y5Y pic.twitter.com/K0WxGCeU4A— CNN (@CNN) September 23, 2019
She is right.
Although she is speaking to the entire world and not just America, in the last three years, climate denial has endangered not only the US but the entire world.
Endless greed for energy and capital growth has resulted in the Trump Administration rolling back 84 environmental statutes, directly using the health of American people, wildlife and environment.
We cannot afford to continue turning a blind eye. We cannot afford centrism, pretending as if there is a “middle ground” to this anymore.
We have no time left.
“People are suffering. People are dying.”
These are not empty words. Greta’s words are representative of real events, such as Indonesia now being forced to relocate over 10 million people and choose an entirely new capital due to sea level rise. Jakarta, the current capital, is being submerged by 10 inches a year, and it is estimated that by 2050, 95% of the city will be under water.
According to WHO, an extreme heat wave in Europe caused an excess of more than 70,000 people in 2003 alone; weather-related natural disasters have more than tripled since the ’60s, resulting in the deaths of over 60,000 people every year – primarily in the Global South; and water-borne and insect-borne diseases are expected to increase in frequency throughout the entire world, while currently over 400,000 people, the majority of which are African children under the age of 5, die annually from malaria, transmitted via the Anopheles spp. mosquito.
There. Is. No. Time. Left.
Climate change is no longer a threat. It is a reality. It is here. And we have no choice but to face it.
We must act.
